You're Beautiful

I've been working 'til the wee hours of the morning, while the TV is tuned to ABSCBN. And if you watch ABSCBN before they shut down broadcasting, they show music videos. A month ago, I chanced upon the MTV of the upcoming Koreanovela that ABSCBN is gonna broadcast, entitled 'He's Beautiful.' I actually thought that the main heroine is Yoon Eun Hye of 'Coffee Prince.' Turns out that its a different actress. My initial reaction upon seeing the mtv from ABSCBN was, "Wow, ang cute nung girl ah. Teka, bakit ganun yung itsura nung male lead... parang emo na bakla!" Haha!

Then a week ago, I bought my usual supplies of DVD. Having seen the 'You're Beautiful' on the vendor's stall, I decided to buy a copy. And... great decision!

Read on.

You're Beautiful

AKA: He's Beautiful
Starring:
Jang Geun Suk as Hwang Tae Kyung
Park Shin Hye as Go Mi Nam/Go Mi Nyu
Lee Hong Ki as Jeremy
Jong Hyong Hwa as Kang Shin Woo

The story is about a popular (faux) Korean rock band, A.N.JELL (obviously a word play on 'angel'), who are looking for an extra new vocalist because their eccentric band leader, Tae Kyung (played by Jang Geun Suk), is having vocal/throat problems. The company president chose Go Mi Nam as the new member. The problem is, Go Mi Nam suffered a botched cosmetic surgery and was sent to the US for re-surgery. Mi Nam's manager thought of the idea to have Mi Nam's twin sister, Go Mi Nyu, a trainee nun who's on her way to Rome to be ordained, pose as Mi Nam for the mean time until the real Mi Nam returns. Hilarity ensues when Mi Nyu tries her damn when she moves into one roof with the three handsome members of A.N.JELL. Will she be successful in keeping her cover?

Like I've said, it was a good decision on my part to actually take time to watch this show. I'll go on a limb and say that this K-drama is better than the popular 'Boys Over Flowers' (sorry, BOF fans, just a personal opinion). The actors are superb! Park Shin Hye as Go Mi Nam/Go Min Nyu is so cute. Great performance. The same goes with the two A.N.JELL members.

But the real star here is Jang Geun Suk as Hwang Tae Kyung. Yeah, the same guy whose my initial reaction was "mukhang baklang emo." This guy is a great actor. And he is so much fun to watch in this drama. Even my mom and sister was hooked to this drama. They're now officially Jang Geun Suk fangirls! They can't get enough of this guy! Haha! The facial expressions that this guy makes in this drama is too funny. Also, the rock star persona that he's evoking is really effective. I'll go on a limb and say that this guy is enough reason to watch this series. Lee Min Ho and the rest of the Korean actors don't have shit on this guy. (interestingly enough, he was the first option for the role of Goo Jun Pyo in 'Boys Over Flowers' which he declined)

And given that this is a drama about a band, a lot of music is involved, right? Yes, there are a lot of music involved. I must even say that the OST is irritatingly catchy and LSS inducing! Haha!

Back to topic, the drama is really worth watching. It kinda starts slow, but by the middle of ep2, you're hooked! My mom keeps re-watching the whole series 'til now! And my sister, nung una ayaw panuorin. But after she started to watch the first four episodes with much prodding from me and my mom, she was hooked na rin! If my mom and I took four days to finish the whole series, my sister finished it in 1 and a half days! Even as I'm writing this, she's on her laptop, looking for more Jang Geun Suk stuff on YouTube! Haha!

So there, I highly recommend this K-drama. If ABSCBN play their cards right (READ: decent dubbing and no bullshits), then they have another hit/mania in their hands. I'm actually not worried about dubbing because ABSCBN usually have decent dubs. What I'm worried about is the "BULLSHITS." Things like the original Korean soundtrack is replaced with a Christian Bautista song or a Yeng Constantino song! You get me, right!? Haha!

To conclude, if you have a chance to watch this series, I recommend that you do. You can try looking for a DVD, or watch it online. Even if ABSCBN is broadcasting the show, I highly recommend that you watch the original Korean version. You'll also be a Jang Geun Suk fan in no time! ;p
