The Snake
A little later this night, there was a commotion. Some guys passing through our house suddenly went jumping and screaming. Tinanong namin bakit... may ahas daw na malaki... tumawid papunta sa bahay namin!!! Yikes!!
So nag-panic kami. Next thing we did was get some flashlights and patrol the gate. Then we called security. While patrolling ourselves, wala kaming makita. Pero nakakatakot since gabi at walang ilaw sa street corner namin. Baka mamaya kasi pumasok yung ahas sa bakod namin.
Once the security arrived, armed with much brighter flashlights (haha!), they found a snake nga on our bakod!! Ang haba!! They started hunting it, at medyo natakot ako. Ang bilis kasi gumalaw nung ahas. As in parang nakikipag patintero yung guard!!
After a while, the guard finally killed the snake. He smashed the head with a night stick... then threw the body on the grass.
I asked him, "Boss, anong klaseng ahas? Sawa ba o yung nanunuklaw?". He answered, "sir, yung nakakalason!". True enough, I saw the snake. Mahaba na mapayat... yung tipong nanunuklaw!
We were all relieved after the snake was dead. But through it all, another thought came up to me: Pity. I felt sorry for the snake while the guards hunted him down and smashed his head.
Imagine that he was just crossing the road. Minding his own business. Then this group of boys saw him and panicked... alarming the residents of a nearby house (us) which in turn panics as well. The snake was probably scared himself. He was just crossing the road after all... then the next thing you know, a group of scared people are hunting him. Next thing he knows, his head is getting smashed by a night stick. Pitiful little creature.
Now don't get me wrong. I'm not a hypocrite. I also panicked since I really hate (and is scared of) snakes. I would have killed him too before he can kill me. But reflecting about it after its all over and down, you can't help but feel sorry for that snake. I guess he never meant to hurt anybody. But since people are so scared of things that they don't understand, they kill them. I guess its the law of nature. And I too, am prone to it. :(
